Company of Heroes 2: what happened?

The original Company of Heroes game was a smash hit. The game, developed by Relic – the studio behind the Dawn of War games for the Warhammer 40k IP, came out to rapturous critical reviews and eager players who couldn’t wait to dive in. Even to this day the game remains a fan favourite thanks to its tight, focused gameplay and level playing field. The second game was hotly anticipated, hyped to the rafters and then, finally, released.

A quick look at the Company of Heroes 2 Steam store page will give you an indication that things were a little bit more rough this time around for Relic and their new publisher, Sega. The base game included a handful of armies, like the first, but since then the game has seen dozens of pieces of downloadable content. New armies, skins, missions – you name it, Company of Heroes 2 has it. It’s a nightmare to navigate and dilutes the game massively.
